Jo Q. Nelson has created a thoughtful, witty, and often dreamy, body of work during her artistic explorations and interactions with space, architecture and environment.

I point at things with imposter light switches, scale models, tiny cameras and reconfigured spaces. In the pointing, something subtle that is usually ignored comes to light. I use installation, intervention, objects, proposals, and social practice as a means to analyze what a space is, how it is used, and to fantasize about what it could be. In the process I address issues of access, transgression, and the different ways we experience the same public and private spaces. By encouraging interaction and by bringing attention to our expectations of the places we move through everyday, I hope to encourage analysis and insights about both concrete and social structures.

We’re excited to see how the unique space of the Dekalb Market has inspired her latest piece which will be installed tomorrow at our big fundraising event for UpRoar Art.

Hayseed’s Big City Farm Supply. is a pop-up shop dedicated to urban farming! A collaborative effort between the folks behind Brooklyn Grange, Domestic Construction and Brooklyn Homesteader, Hayseed’s will supply soil, compost, tools, seeds, books, chicken and rabbit feed, beekeeping supplies as well as other locally made, farm related sundries.

These amazing new friends have graciously donated planting soil, heirloom tomatoes, basil, onions, broccoli and eggplant seedlings for the potting activity tomorrow at our Dekalb Market fundraiser.

Please take the time to check them out, or even better… drop by and see their space. I assure you, the Domestic Construction ladies have created a magical space that’s tucked away in an unexpected nook within industrial Greenpoint.

The next featured band to be playing at our upcoming fundraiser is Brooklyn, by way of Bogotá, based, Il abanico.

Il abanico is an Indie/Experimental band created in 2010 by Nicolás Losada (guitar) and Juliana Ronderos (Voice). They expose their personalities with innovative melodies, an upbeat rhythm section and unorthodox guitars. Originally from Bogotá, Colombia, this duo recorded and self-released their first work “Crossing Colors” (February 2011), A 5 songs EP, recorded in well renowned Studio G in Brooklyn, NY.

In September 2011 they toured their way across the US in a successful 18-date tour which included cities such as New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Houston, Austin, San Diego and Los Angeles, amongst others. Having played over 90 shows this year, il abanico is currently living and working in Brooklyn, performing and writing material for their new album.

il abanico was part of the Offical SXSW 2012 and will be part of NXNE (Canada) in July 2012.

Our big fundraising event this Saturday (June 2nd) at the Dekalb Market is quickly approaching! We thought it’d be great to do a daily highlight of each band set to play our musical showcase. If you’re digging the tunes over these here interwebs, you better believe they’ll sound even better in the open air of a Brooklyn summer night.

First up…

Brooklyn’s Marigold (Richie Einhorn and Milah Libin) have a great album up at Bandcamp. They have this adorable, damn delightful vibe that is a bit The Head And The Heart (meets The Pretenders at times). Milah and Richie’s voices just mesh so perfectly with each other and you just don’t want them to stop singing. True story. You can download all of Marigold for free over at Bandcamp!”

WHY:

Brooklyn-based community organizers, The Project Collective, plan curated art and music events in efforts to promote dialogue and awareness, while supporting local Community Based Organizations.

Over the past month, Project Collective has been building their presence at the Dekalb Market through gradual art installations from Andrea Burgay and Mano-Gray as well as hosting their Saturday market table. These efforts have been building up for an official opening and fundraising event for UpRoar Art taking place Saturday June 2nd. It is a full day event with a variety of children and adult activities (10am-6pm), leading up to musical showcase (6pm-10pm) to celebrate UpRoar Art, The Project Collective and our host The Dekalb Market

Proceeds from the event will go to UpRoar Art, a non-profit working very hard to bring free or low-cost art education to Brooklyn Public Schools and other arts organizations.

ACTIVITIES (10am-10pm)

Art Activities - UpRoar Art will provide free art activities for children (10-6pm)
Newspaper Planting Pots - Fold newspapers into small portable plots, plant a seedling of your choice and transport home! (10am-6pm)
Tarot Card Readings - Multi talented Clara Bizna$$, reading tarot cards for donations (3pm-10pm)
Nail Art - Local Brooklyn nail art hero Ria Lopez will be proving nail art for donations (6-10pm)

Friends and Future Friends! All of us here at TPC are very excited to announce our latest partnership for our upcoming event at the Dekalb Market!

Proceeds from the event will go to Uproar Art, a wonderful non-profit working very hard to bring free or low-cost art education to Brooklyn Schools and other arts organizations.

Check out their website to learn more about their mission, programs and classes and we look forward to seeing you at our event in May!

Uproar Art is an all-purpose 501-c-3 not-for-profit art program designed for kids and teens. We offer intensive, skill-based, technical and creative education in a structured, nurturing and individualized learning environment. Our classes are off the beaten path, innovative, socially conscious and designed to test the boundaries of young artists. Our instructors are experts working in their fields, who also must have teaching experience. Think of this program as a haven for creativity, personal growth and making creative friends.

This year we’ve finished our incorporation as a non-profit, and are actively seeking funding so that we can offer free and low-cost art education in local Brooklyn schools. As always we continue to partner with other arts organizations in our community to offer weekend and after school classes as well. The Project Collective presents Maria Builes, a steady ally to TPC and the first of many artists to be participating in our collaboration with The Dekalb Market.

Maria will be performing an ongoing piece titled, Self-Employment. Arriving at the market every weekday, she will set out to complete various self-assigned tasks such as exercising, reading a self help book and learning French.

Come out this weekend for the market’s season opening, and catch Maria in action!

ARTIST CALL!!!

The Project Collective is now accepting proposal submissions for our upcoming, longest and LARGEST event ever!

TPC’s mission is to build stronger communities through art and music, while supporting the community through charitable efforts . In every event we host, we in turn donate all proceeds to a local charity. This particular event will be held at The Dekalb Market, located in Downtown Brooklyn. In conjunction with the Dekalb market we will hold an official fundraiser for a local charity (TBD) on MAY 19TH. From April to June artists will have the opportunity to show work throughout the Market. For this event, we expect the art to develop gradually during the 3 month period.

Surfaces for art will include: shipping containers, wire fences around the market, and any other kind of surface so long as its not using the floorspace.

TPC is looking for artists in all kinds of media: sculpture, performance, video, any interactive, and environmental art. Please send us a brief proposal with a link to your website or a few images to projectcollective.events@gmail.com by no later than April 7th.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask! Looking forward to your submissions!
